First Aid

 

Overview:

This unit of competency deals with the provision of essential First Aid in recognising and responding to and emergency using basic life support measures. The First Aider is not expected to deal with complex casualties or incidents, but to provide an initial response where First Aid is required.  In this unit it is assumed the First Aider is working under supervision and/or according to established workplace First Aid procedures and policies.

This course is equivalent to and has been known as “Senior First Aid” and “Level II First Aid”

Unit of Competency:

HLTAID003 – Provide First Aid

Elements:

  • Assess the situation
  • Apply basic First Aid techniques
  • Communicate details of the incident

Course Content:

  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Basic anatomy and function of the human body
  • Wounds, bleeding and shock
  • Burns
  • Fractures
  • Other traumatic injuries
  • Eye injuries
  • Common medical emergencies
  • Poisoning
  • Bites and stings
  • Environmental exposure
  • Choking
  • Legislative requirements

Nominal Duration:

1 Day (Flexible delivery format)

or

2 Day (Theory and Practical completed in class format)

Who Should Attend:

Employees, supervisors, managers and anyone who has the responsibility for providing first aid with-in an organisation and anyone with an interest or need to learn first aid.

Training Methods: 

The course will be presented by group discussion, role plays, video, syndicate exercise, case studies, practical exercises, lecture and report writing. The course is interactive and practical.

Course Assessment:

The assessment criteria for this course will be based on both informal and formal processes (as per  Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) requirements for competency based training).

The assessment methods used during the course will be:

  • 40 question theory paper
  • Workbook (1 Day Format only)
  • CPR practical activity
  • First aid practical activity
  • Group discussions

Award:

On successful completion of this course participants will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the nationally recognised unit of competency from the Health Training Package.

  • HLTAID003 – Provide First Aid, valid for three (3) years.
